REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR 3-THEATRE AUDITION WORKSHOP

Join us for a 2-session workshop series designed to teach you the fundamentals and etiquette of auditioning across different theatre settings in Bloomington-Normal. This workshop, presented by Heartland Theatre Company in collaboration with Community Players Theatre and Nomad Theatre will guide you through the specific audition expectations and processes of each venue.

These sessions are free and limited to the first 15 registrants age 18 and over.

Session One: Audition 101 -January 19, 3-4:30 at Heartland Theatre

In this dynamic first session, participants discover what it takes to shine in the audition room. From mastering the art of cold reading and breaking down scripts with confidence to building instant chemistry with a scene partner, the session offers essential tools to make every audition memorable. Whether navigating the unknown or honing quick instincts, this workshop sets the stage for unlocking your acting potential.

Topics may include, and not limited to:

  • Intro to each theatre and their audition process
  • Audition etiquette
  • Cold reading
  • Voice projection
  • Script reading techniques
  • Callback preparation (musicals, role-specific tasks)

Session 2: Audition Deep Dive – January 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Community Players Theatre

An in-depth, participation heavy session where we answer your questions about auditions, but also work through sample cold readings and provide feedback. This session will also focus on preparing a successful musical theatre audition. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Audition song tips (16 bars)
  • Musical Theatre callback
  • Partner collaboration
  • Audition Q&A -we focus on your submitted questions about auditions

Whether you’re new to auditions or looking to sharpen your skills for a new theatre in town, this workshop will prepare you for success in the audition room!

Heartland Theatre Company is offering an Improv workshop consisting of eight sessions culminating in a performance. This workshop will be delivered by Wes Melton on Heartland’s stage. Delivered in a participatory format, attendees will learn basic principles of improv as well as applying principles of improv to theatrical, work, and everyday life. Attendees will be learning and practicing short form improv games with an introduction to various long forms. Class size is limited to 12. Registration is with the online form below. Payment of $150.00 is requested the first day of classes by check, credit card or cash.

SPRING SESSION MARCH 2025: Yet to be determined

Heartland Theatre Company offers an exciting class in play writing for the second time, due to popular demand. The class is a 5-session workshop from 5:30 – 7:00 pm, March 2025. The class instructor is Bruce Boeck, winning local and national playwright in the short play category.

The classes are designed to introduce students, age 18 and up, to the fundamentals of the playwriting process for short plays– including ideas, characters, plot, conflict, dialogue and endings. He will use existing samples of plays plus assignments for participants between class sessions. Class size is limited to only 15 participants.

About Bruce Boeck, instructor:

Bruce Boeck has written over 100 short plays since 2008, including three that were performed at Heartland Theatre’s 10-Minute Play Festival. His work has been performed across the US and Canada and his play, “Too Close For Comfort” was included in Best 5-Minute Plays.  You may have seen his plays in Heartland Theatre Company’s Young at Heartland program for senior actors. He has taught at Lincoln College and Heartland Community College.
